Rory Hie fires opening-round 63 to set the pace at Gurugram Challenge

Indonesian golfer Rory Hie set the bar high with a spectacular nine-under 63 to claim a two-shot lead in the opening round of the Gurugram Challenge on Tuesday.

The 33-year-old Rory, who won his maiden Asian Tour event at the Classic Golf & Country Club in 2019, produced an error-free round to keep up his confidence at the event co-sanctioned by the PGTI and the Asian Development Tour (ADT).

Ira Alido of the Philippines had an impressive day at work, as with a sizzling 7-under 65, he took the solo second position at the US$ 75,000 prize money event.

Twenty-one-year-old rookie Alido also had a flawless round, and with the help of seven birdies, he reached seven-under for the day. He hit his wedges well as he chipped in on the 12th and landed most other shots within a range of six feet of the flag.

Four Indians, Amrit Lal Lubana, Tapy Ghai, Shamim Khan and Rajiv Kumar Jatiwal shared the third spot at 66 along with Chanat Sakulpolaphasian of Thailand.

Tapy Ghai, who was playing on his home course, had a run of five straight birdies from third to seventh. After a double-bogey on the 12th, he rebounded brilliantly with two birdies to tie for third place.

The other three Indians at third, Amrit Lal Lubana, went error-free during his 66. Shamim Khan had an eagle on the closing 18th, with five birdies and a bogey. Rajiv Kumar Jatiwal came up with eight birdies and two bogeys.

Chanat Sakulpolaphasian, who finished last week’s event at tied 23rd, started the day with a par-bogey but didn’t make any mistake after the second hole and smashed seven birdies to score 66.

A pack of six golfers, including the pre-tournament favourite, were tied-8th after all six carded a matching 5-under 67 on day one.
