Jon Rahm victorious at US Open, becomes first Spaniard to win US Open title

Rahm carded a four-under-par 67 in the final round of the US Open to claim his first major championship on Sunday at Torrey Pines in San Diego.

Rahm smashed birdies on the final two holes - including an 18-footer on the 18th hole to grab his first major championship at the U.S. Open.

It had been almost four decades since a golfer birdied the last two holes to win a US Open.

The victory comes two weeks after he was forced to withdraw from a PGA Tour event when he was leading by six shots after three rounds because of a positive coronavirus test.

"I am a big believer in karma," Rahm said. "After what happened a couple of weeks ago, I stayed really positive knowing big things were coming. I didn't know what it was going to be. I got out of COVID protocol early. I just felt like the stars were aligning." Rahm had tested positive for coronavirus and was in quarantine.

Louis Oosthuizen, who was tied for first after the third round, finished two strokes short of winning his second major. He also ended second at the PGA Championship last month.

Oosthuizen parred the 15th and 16th holes to remain 5-under but bogeyed the 17th to fall two shots behind. A birdie on 18 secured his final score of 5 under.

Rahm got his breakthrough PGA Tour victory at Torrey Pines in the Farmers Insurance Open.

"I didn't know what it was going to be, but I knew we were coming to a special place. I got my breakthrough win here [on the PGA Tour], and it is a very special place for my family," he said.

The world's five top-ranked players and four-time major; winners Rory McIlroy and Brooks Koepka - were within three strokes of the lead early as the tension grew.

But suddenly, they all left far behind, leaving only Rahm and Oosthuizen to try their luck in the final holes.

Defending champion Bryson DeChambeau (77) made two bogeys and two double bogeys on the back nine finished his campaign at the tied-26th position.
