British Open 2016: Nine strong contenders for the Claret Jug.

The British Open is here and boy do we have some story-lines.

This year, both Majors and US open have been won by first-time major winners and the golfing world is keen to see the winner of the British open scheduled next week.

The Royal Troon has often delivered strange winners, the list of golfers below are the ones to look upon if you are a neutral party and just want to enjoy some good golf. These nine represent the best stories with the most real chances of holding the Claret Jug.

1. Rickie Fowler:

This world no. 4  could reasonably be called the best player in the world without a major championship. He has two top-fives in his last five Opens to prove it. If you're lusting for an American dream to come true, this is the one to root for.

2. Lee Westwood:

Speaking of top-30 finishes, this 43-year-old guy for whom a major championship would mean so much. Especially at this stage of his career. Noted for his consistency, Westwood is one of the few golfers who has won tournaments on five continents – Europe, North America, Asia, Africa and Australia, the golfer definitely deserves a no. two place on this list.

3. Sergio Garcia:

It seems completely unfair that the man has 21 top-10 finishes at major championships and no wins. Garcia has spent much of his career in the top 10 of the Official World Golf Ranking (over 300 weeks between 2000 and 2009). British open could finally end his long wait.

4. Henrik Stenson:

Yet another no-time major championship winner. This player from Sweden doesn't have the heartbreak of the others, but he does have three top-threes in British open since 2008. It would be a delight to see him take home the Claret Jug.

5. Dustin Johnson:

After winning the US open Johnson fancies his chances of winning the British open to make it three straight tournament wins including two major championships.

6. Jordan Spieth:

This 22-year-old American golfer is former world number one and is a two-time major winner. Spieth tied the 72-hole record set by Tiger Woods in 1997 and became the second youngest to win the Masters, behind Woods. He then won the 2015 US open making him the youngest US open champion. The British open is the next Speith would be looking at.

7. Rory Mcilroy:

This Irish golfer is a 4-time major winner and is now ranked no.4 in the official world golf rankings. A win at the Open championship could make him top the world rankings.

8. Adam Scott:

His biggest win to date was the 2013 Masters Tournament, his first major championship and the first Masters won by an Australian in its history, also a 2012 runner-up of the Open championship Adam Scott is the no.8 on our list of strong contenders for the Claret Jug.

9. Shane Lowry:

This golfer has set his stakes high after his successful run at the US Open. The Irish beauty is no. 9 on our list of contenders for the Claret Jug.
