Tom Hoge outdueled the mighty Jordan Spieth to claim his maiden PGA Tour victory at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am.
Hoge won the competition by two strokes after scoring (63-69-68-68) in four rounds, with twenty-seven birdies to four bogeys and two double-bogeys.
The 32-year-old Hoge, who enjoyed the two out of first three days at the top of the leaderboard, faced the former No.1 Spieth’s challenge on Sunday at the Pebble Beach Golf Links in California. But Hoge gave a tough fight to the 12-time PGA Tour winner Spieth to clinch his first PGA Tour title.
The game was clearly in Spieth's pocket until the 15th hole when he was leading by one shot with only three holes to play, but his bogey at the 17th ruined his chances of victory, while Hoge, on the other hand, smashed two consecutive birdies on the 16th and 17th holes, and with both hitting pars on the final hole, Hoge emerged as champion.
Beau Hossler, who was the joint overnight leader, had a rough day at the office as he only managed to shoot 1-under 71 to finish at third with a tournament tally of 17-under 271.
Hoge, with this victory, earned the spot to play the prestigious Masters this year, along with two years playing exemption on the PGA Tour.
Pre-tournament favourite Patrick Cantlay, who started his day with one shot of the lead, also had a rollercoaster kind of round to end his run at tied-4th alongside Troy Merritt.Posted on: 2022 Feb 7 Mon
