Shubhankar Sharma shoots 6-under 65 in opening round, lies T-2 at Magical Kenya Open

Top-ranked Indian golfer Shubhankar Sharma started his Magical Kenya Open’s campaign with a solid 6-under 65 to lie tied-2nd on Thursday.

The 25-year old Sharma shot three birdies on the front nine and three birdies on the back nine, alongwith twelve pars in his 18-hole game to bring home an error-free first-round card.

Daniel Gavins of England carded a brilliant 7-under 64 to take the first-round lead at €1,000,000 prize money event being played at the Muthaiga Golf Club in Kenya.

Gavins, who won his maiden DP World event last year at ISPS Handa Invitational, smashed nine birdies against two bogeys to grab a one-shot lead over India’s Shubhankar Sharma and Johannes Veerman of America.

The 29-year old Johannes Veerman shot five birdies, one eagle and one bogey in his opening round to end his day at 6-under 65.Sharma, who is currently at the fifth spot on DP World Tour Ranking, is looking to end his winless streak on DP world tour as his last victory came in 2018.

The 2018 Asian Tour Order of Merit winner Sharma finished just one stroke behind the champion in the season opener in January and is in solid touch to capture his third DP World championship.

England’s Lee Slattery and Even Ferguson of Scotland both posted a matching 5-under 66s to share tied-4th heading into the second round.
