Sepp Straka holds off Shane Lowry to win 2022 Honda Classic
Austrian golfer Sepp Straka birdied the final 18th hole to win the 2022 Honda Classic over veteran Shane Lowry.
Straka and Lowry both started their final day campaign at the tied-2nd position but the nail-biting final round ended in Straka’s favour as the 28-year-old smashed an impressive birdie on the final hole to clinch his maiden PGA Tour title.
Kurt Kitayama, the third man on tied-2nd before the start of the last round, shot a decent 2-under 68 to end his run at solo third with a tournament total of 8-under 272.
Daniel Berger, the guy with having a 5-shot lead entering the final round, had a dreary fourth and final round as he managed to score a rollercoaster 4-over 74 to finish at fourth.
After the first nine holes game, Straka was one behind Lowry, and everyone was hoping that Lowry would easily win the title.
Starka then made four consecutive pars on the 10 to 13 holes, while on those four holes, Lowry shot one birdie and three pars to grab a two-shot advantage over Straka.
The game became tense when Lowry failed to convert any par into a birdie from the 14th to the 16th holes, but Straka birdied the par-4 14th, then parred the 15th and birdied the 16th, putting both players on the same level.
The duo raised the tension in the game by both parring the 17th hole with two holes to go and both at 9-under 263.
On the decider par-5th eighteenth hole, Lowry missed to convert and shot a par, while Straka didn’t miss the oppourtunity and shot a birdie to grab his maiden title on the prestigious PGA Tour.
Straka made history by becoming the first Austrian to win on the PGA Tour with this victory.
