Tony Finau beats Cameron Smith in playoff to win The Northern Trust

Tony Finau has overcome some late drama in the playoff to end his 5-year PGA Tour win drought with victory at the Northern Trust on Monday.

Finau warded off Cameron Smith at the rain-delayed first event of the FedExCup playoffs system to claim his second PGA Tour title after 1975 days.

The last tournament he won was the Puerto Rico Open in 2016. Since then, the 31-year-old golfer had a solid run with eight second-place finishes and forty top-10 finishes, but he remained winless in these five years.

Finally, after finishing 20-under 264 in four days, Finau locked horns with Cameron Smith for the playoffs, in which he emerged as a winner at the rain-delayed Northern Trust.

Cameron Smith, who had been looking like a champion until the 17th hole, missed a 25-foot birdie putt on the final hole of regulation, which would have given him the championship.

Jon Rahm, who held at least a share of lead each of 1st three rounds, carded 2-over in the final round to finish his campaign at the third position.

Justin Thomas, Alex Noren and Tom Hoge tied for fourth at 15-under par for the tournament.

The 125 players competed at the Northern Trust for a total prize purse of $9.5 million, with Finau earning $1.7 million as the winner.

The final round of the event, which was scheduled to take place on Sunday, was postponed due to the predicted hurricane henry, and on a reserved day Monday, the final round started late due to heavy rain across New Jersey.
