The M Battle: 2016 TaylorMade M2 vs. 2017 TaylorMade M2

The M Battle: 2016 TaylorMade M2 vs. 2017 TaylorMade M2

TaylorMade recently followed the success of their 2016 M2 driver with a release of the 2017 M2 driver. Many are asking what is the difference between the two is. We ring the bell in this “M Battle,” comparing each to see which one reigns victorious. (Ding, Ding, Ding)

M Battle: Round 1 – Looks

At address, the two clubs look almost identical. Using additional carbon fiber in crown construction, the 2017 M2, above right, has a slightly smaller white section at address. It gives the club a slightly longer look from front to back. “Geocoustic” design, which we’ll address in the next section, creates a bigger face on the 2017 M2. The larger face adds to the forgiveness offered in the 2017 M2.

M Battle: Round 2 – Technology

The 2017 M2, above right, contains some updates to the extremely successful technology used in the 2016 model. TaylorMade began putting a speed pocket in the sole of their drivers in the Aeroburner series. The company continues the trend in both M2 models. The design adds ball speed, especially on shots struck off-center. The speed pocket in the 2017 model gets a facelift, making it three times as flexible as the 2016 M2. The slot itself, in the 2017 M2, is deeper than its counterpart in the 2016 M2.

The titanium panel on the toe section of the sole in the 2017 M2 has been sunken. Thus, volume is saved, giving the club a slightly larger footprint while still maintaining a total of 460cc.

TaylorMade began focusing on the internal design with the 2016 M2. They were able to give the 2016 M2 a solid sound and feel at impact. Inverted Cone Technology, first used in the R7 Irons, gives the 2016 M2 a high MOI and forgiveness. For 2017, the M2 uses a new “Geocoustic” design, using less internal support ribs than the 2016 M2. “Geocoustic” improves on an already solid sound and feel. Club engineers also take 25 grams of weight in the 2017 M2, re-distributing it lower and farther back in the clubhead. Doing so results in more forgiveness and a more solid sound over the 2016 model.

M Battle: Round 3 – Performance

When it comes to performance, both clubs are long and forgiving. Each uses their technologies to the fullest to produce high-launching, low-spinning shots. For those looking for help fighting a slice, TaylorMade adds a new M2 to its lineup. The M2 D Type Driver promotes a draw, placing weight closer to the heel. The face angle on the M2 D-Type is designed specifically to help square the club at impact. Customers also have more options in custom shaft offerings in the 2017 M2, making it easier to get fit into the best club setup.

Judges Scorecard

When making a decision in the “M Battle”, the 3 things to consider are the look, the ability to customize, and the pricing. The 2016 M2 offers a club that performs very well for the golfer on a budget. The upgrades found in the 2017 M2 definitely lend to TaylorMade’s tagline, “Same Letter, Better Everything.”
