Patrick Cantley beats Collin Morikawa in playoff to win 2021 Memorial Tournament

Patrick Cantlay delivered a clutch birdie late in the round and a 12-foot par putt in a playoff to win the Memorial on a Sunday at the Muirfield Village Golf Club, Dublin.

Cantlay closed with a one-under 71 and won the Memorial for the second time in three years. He made four birdies against three bogeys in his roller-coaster final round but won the $9,300,000 prize money event in a playoff.

Cantlay had missed three of his last four cuts but regained his form on a place he loves. His rounds of 69-67-68 got him in position on Sunday.

Jon Rahm, the defending champion whose third-round 64 gave him a six-shot lead, had to withdraw because of a positive coronavirus test.

"Such a weird situation and so unfortunate,'' Cantlay said.”Because, me included, everyone knows it would have been a totally different day had that not happened. But there's nothing I could do about it. I just tried as hard as I could to reset and get focused.''

Morikawa, the 2020 PGA champion, was trying to win his fifth title in just 47 career starts said, “Obviously, it sucks to lose a playoff. But today was a grind and that’s all I could focus on,” Morikawa said. “I was hitting the ball well, but it didn’t show that. I couldn’t really hit a green for my life.”

Scottie Scheffler, who was seeking his first PGA Tour title, closed with a bogey on the last to finish at solo third with a total of 11 under. Branden Grace made a 40-footer for birdie on the 72nd hole to finish with a 71 and at 10 under.
