Patrick Cantlay defeats Jon Rahm to win Tour Championship, FedEx Cup title and $15 prize money

Patrick Cantlay won his first Tour Championship title after shooting a 1-under 69 in the final round on Sunday at the East Lake Golf Club.

Cantlay, who won the BMW Championship, last week, fired 11-under in four days to win the third and final leg of the FedEx Cup playoffs by one shot.

Though, he finished the event at a total of 21-under, including a bonus 10-under par gained after capturing the top slot in the FedEx Cup rankings.

The competition going neck-and-neck between Patrick and Jon Rahm until Rahm missed his eagle shot and gave Cantlay two putts to win the game.

"I think for a long time, everything just went great. Growing up, I felt like I got better and better in golf, and life got better and better, and then it got as bad as it could have been. I felt as low as it could have been for a little while, said Cantlay.

I'm just very grateful to be where I am," he added, "and I'm so satisfied with all the hard work paying off."

The five-time PGA Tour champion Kevin Na closed at solo third, while the former World No. 1 Justin Thomas ended up outright fourth at 15-under.

Defending champion Dustin Johnson finished his campaign at solo eight after producing 11-under.

The 2019 FedEx Cup winner Rory McIlroy grabbed the tied-14th spot, while the pre-tournament favourite Brooks Koepka made an early exit from the tournament after facing a wrist injury.

With this win, Cantlay received $15 million from the FedEx Cup bonus fund, with Rahm getting $5 million.

Also, his victory at the BMW Championship last week secured him one of six qualification slots on the US Ryder Cup team. Captain Steve Stricker will announce his six wildcard picks on Wednesday, 8 September.
