NEW EQUIPMENT: TaylorMade 2017 Spider Tour Putter

Jason Day and Dustin Johnson finished the 2015-16 PGA Tour season ranked Nos. 1 and 2 in the world, and they used the same model putter, a TaylorMade Spider Tour. The mid-sized mallets used by the Australian and the American were based on TaylorMade putters that had been available to the public, but they were slightly different than retail models.

TaylorMade introduced the exact Spider Tour used by Day and Johnson, in retail since 2017.

There are two technologies at the heart of the Spider Tour putters: a multi-material frame and a unique face insert.

“Creating a putter that is more stable for certain strokes is key,” said Bill Price, TaylorMade’s director of development for putters and wedges. “Golfers often buy putters based on looks. ‘I like that look,’ they’ll say. But does that putter fit them? Maybe, maybe not. But today, there are also putters that are all about performance. This is one of those putters, and the performance putter category is growing.”

The 355-gram head incorporates a high-density stainless steel frame wrapped around a lightweight aluminum core. This design pushes more of the overall weight to the perimeter and greatly enhances stability, especially on off-center hits, according to TaylorMade. As a result, the sweet spot of the Spider Tour expands and should help players improve distance control.

TaylorMade previously released putters with a True Roll face insert, but it has been updated. The insert itself is trapezoid-shaped and is made from aluminum with thermoplastic urethane (TPU). The grooves point downward at a 45-degree angle and help the putter grab the ball at impact to get it rolling more quickly instead of hopping or skidding.

TaylorMade said it’s the combination of increased stability with a quicker roll that will help players get more consistent results.

Golfers will notice that both the red and the black versions of the Spider Tour putters feature a round crown devoid of alignment lines.

“If you talk to Jason Day, he’ll tell you that he does not use a sight line because it is one less thing for him to concentrate on,” Price said. “He’s very methodical, but we think there is something to it because when Dustin Johnson switched to this putter (at the Barclays Championship), he went without an alignment line, too. It frees up their minds, so they don’t have to line up the ball and the alignment line.”

Aside from the color, the only other distinction between the Spider Tour Red and Black is the crimson’s insert is made using Surlyn and is softer. Price said Day likes its muted sound and softer feel.

The Spider Tour Red and Black both will cost nearly Rs.19990/- and come in 34-inches model.
