Max Homa holds off McNealy to win Fortinet Championship
Max Homa won the season-opening Fortinet Championship by one stroke after shooting a superb 7-under 65 in the final round at the North Course in Napa.
Even though Homa won in the end, the final round was certainly a neck-and-neck battle between Homa and McNealy, especially from the 12th hole.
After 11 holes, Homa was three strokes behind overnight leader McNealy, but he quickly changed gears and made an eagle on the 12th and a birdie on the thirteenth to tie McNealy for the lead.
Both made pars on 14th, and 15th then again both smashed birdie on 16th and remained joint leaders, but on the 17th hole, Homa chipped in for birdie, but McNealy lost his control and shot a blunder that was a double bogey.
That left McNealy three shots behind Homa. McNealy struck a spectacular eagle on the final hole, but he lost the game by a single stroke to Homa, who shot level par to win.
Chilean golfer Mito Pereira finished at solo third with a total score of 16-under 272. Marc Leishman of Australia and the American Talor Gooch secured a tied-4th spot.
The biggest names in the event consist of Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama and PGA Championship winner Phil Mickelson.
Matsuyama finished his campaign at the tied-6th position. But, Mickelson failed to make any special effect in the season-opening event and ended his run at the tied-36th place.
Homa won for the second time this year and the third time on the PGA Tour. His last victory was at Riviera in Los Angeles in February.
