Justin Thomas wins The Players Championship
The world number three Justin Thomas shot a 4-under 68 in the final round to grab the prestigious Players Championship title by one stroke over Lee Westwood at the Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, on Sunday.
The sensational Thomas produced some sensational golf to post a four-under 68 as he came from three back to win his 14th PGA Tour title with an overall score of 14 under.
Thomas played some brilliant golf over the weekend to get the job done, posting scores of 64-68, but he enjoyed an outrageous moment of good fortune at the 18th to seal his success.
Westwood was a hard-luck runner-up for the second straight week — to Bryson DeChambeau at Bay Hill, to Thomas at The Players.
"It's a lot harder than when there weren't fans here," Thomas told Golf Channel after his round. "I fought so hard today. I stayed really patient. One of the best rounds of my life from tee to green. Total control of the ball."
"It's been a crappy couple of months. I've had stuff happen in my life I never thought I'd have happened," Thomas said. "Losing grandpa was terrible, and having to play a round of golf dealing with that, and then on top of that not playing well, it just was a lot, and it took a lot on me mentally.
"This week was huge to win a big championship like this in front of fans again, which is incredible. It tested me mentally, physically, emotionally, and I'm very proud of myself for getting it done."
Westwood holed a birdie putt from 20ft at the 18th, left him one shot behind the champion Thomas.
The American Brian Harman made three birdies on the back nine to finish at tied-3 place alongside the last week champion Bryson DeChambeau at 12 under par.
