Anirban Lahiri cards 1-under 71 in first round of Rocket Mortgage Classic

Indian golfer Anirban Lahiri carded a 1-under 71 in the first round of Rocket Mortgage Classic to take the tied-87th position on Thursday.

Anirban, who is ready to represent India in the Magnum Opus Olympics, hit 11 out of 18 greens in regulation during his day one campaign at the Detroit Golf club, Michigan.

The 34-year-old golfer made three birdies against two bogeys in the field of 156 golfers at the $7,500,000 prize money event.

Lahiri, who is seeking his maiden win on the PGA Tour, need to play a solid second round to be in contention.

The Bengalurean won his last worldwide title at home in the Hero Indian Open in 2015, and his last two wins came in three weeks in 2015, when he won the Malaysia Open and the Hero Indian Open.

Davis Thomson, who is playing his third PGA Tour game as a professional, tied the Detroit Golf Club record after carding a brilliant 9-under 63 in the rain-interrupted day one.

Thomson played a flawless round, and with the help of nine birdies, he takes the first-round lead at the Rocket Mortgage Classic.

Brandon Hagy, Tom Lewis and Joaquin Niemann carded 7-under 65s to tie for second. Seamus Power and J.J. Spaun were three shots back after rounds of 6-under 66.

Thirteen golfers were tied for the 7th position at 5-under, including the Canadian Roger Sloan, who was on the 16th hole when play suspended.

Defending champion Bryson DeChambeau, who parted his ways with long-time caddie Tim Rucker ahead of the first round, carded an even-par on day one to settle at tied-110th position.
