Anirban Lahiri shoots modest 69 in opening round of The American Express

Indian golfer Anirban Lahiri started his 2022 campaign with a modest 3-under 69 at The American Express on Thursday.

Lahiri, who returned to the PGA Tour after a one-and-a-half-month break, had a steady first round in his first start of the season, making two birdies, one eagle, and only one bogey to finish day one at tied-52 position.

2021 FedEx Cup champion Patrick Cantlay carded a super impressive 10-under 62 to share the first-round lead with Lee Hodges.

Both Cantlay and Hodges had error-free rounds, with a similar number of birdies (eight) and one eagle.

K.H Lee and Cameron Young each carded 8-under 64 to share tied-3rd going into the second round of the PGA Tour’s third professional tournament of 2022.

As many as eight golfers, including 9-time PGA Tour winner Brandt Snedeker, were a further shot back at the tied-5th place.

The pre-tournament favourite and the current World No.1 Jon Rahm, who shot 6-under 66, was at tied-13th spot alongside ten others. While Harry Higgs, who also was in Rahm’s group with 66, had a hole-in-one on the par-3 15th at La Quinta.

Tournament host and the 2021 PGA championship winner Phil Mickelson was tied for last in the 156-player field after dreary a 78 at La Quinta.
