Anirban Lahiri cards a modest 71 in opening round of Farmers Insurance Open
Anirban Lahiri started his Farmers Insurance Open campaign on a decent note to lie 76th after the end of the first round at the Joyo Country Club.
The 34-year-old, who had a rollercoaster first event of 2022 and finished 66th, began this week’s tournament with a modest 1-under 71.
Lahiri, the lone Indian playing in the competition, made four birdies against three bogeys at the star-studded PGA Tour’s $8,400,000 prize money event.
Veteran Billy Horschel took the honour of leading the event on the first day after carding a brilliant 9-under 63.
The 2021 BMW PGA Championship leader played a flawless round, and with the help of nine birdies, he grabbed the top spot.
Michael Thompson, who also had an error-free day one, was one stroke behind the leader at solo second.
Thompson, who is searching for his first win since 2020, looks in good form as apart from his impressive first round of 8-under, he had a tied-fifth finish (in his bag of inner-confidence) at the Sony Open two weeks back.
Stephan Jager of Germany and America’s Kewin Tway were at tied-3rd with 7-under 65s.
While a pack of four golfers, including World No.1 Jon Rahm, were at a joint-fifth place with matching scores of 6-under 66.
Defending champion Patrick Reed had a not so pleasant first-round, as he only managed to card an even-par 72 to sit at the tied-96th position.
