Amardeep Malik takes charge with two-shot lead at halfway stage of Delhi-NCR Open

Amardeep Malik carded a brilliant five-under 67 to take a two-shot lead at the halfway stage of the Delhi-NCR Open.

Malik, the overnight joint-leader, had a good second day at the Noida golf course, and with the help of five birdies and one eagle against two bogeys, he registered five-under for the day and 12-under-132 total to grab the lead heading into the weekend action.

Veteran Mari Muthu R took the honours of shooting the best round of the day. He posted a superb eight- under 64 to climb from overnight tied-15th to second place.

Manu Gandas, the joint-leader after round one, had a steady day at work, as with a score of three-under 69 he settled at the tied-second place after round two.

Malik, who has won both his previous titles at Noida Golf Course, started the day with a birdie on the first and then added three more birdies on the sixth, eighth and ninth for a strong front-nine.

The 36-year-old Malik had a turbulent start to the back-nine stumbling with bogeys on the 11th and 13th, where he missed up and downs. Malik then bounced back with an eagle on 15th followed by a birdie on 16th, and with two pars, he ended his day at the solo first place.

The pre-tournament favourite and the last week’s winner Yuvraj Singh Sandhu claimed the last qualifying berth to the weekend action after a steady even-par 72 on the second day at Noida golf course.

Abhijit Singh Chadha of Chandigarh occupies a fourth place at nine-under 135, while Bangladesh’s Md Zamal Hossain Mollah (70) was a further shot back in the fifth position. The cut went at one over 145.

Fifty-one professionals make the cut. 2021 Delhi-NCR Open winner Udayan Mane missed the cut after carding two consecutive rounds of 2-over 74.

Ajay Baisoya, Digvijay Singh, Khalin Joshi, Md Nawab, Vishav Pratap Singh Gill, Anura Rohana, Gaurav Ghei, Arjun Bhati, and Divyanshu Bajaj, among the other notables who failed to make the cut.
